Nicorette gum to help quit smoking?

I used to smoke 2 packs of Newport Menthol cigarettes a day. I stopped smoking them and started dipping 2 cans of Skoal snuff a day. Now I am only dipping 1 can a day. Will Nicorette gum help me stop dipping and is it a safer alternative to dipping?
